They have the opportunity to help teenagers learn life lessons that will benefit them for a lifetime. As veteran officials continue to retire, new officials have an opportunity to make a huge difference in the lives of hundreds of young people every year.
High school sports officiating is a challenging job, but there are great rewards. To be a successful official, you will need mental toughness, good people skills, and a thick skin. As social media and networking continue to increase in popularity, MHSAA Registered officials must understand the importance of participating in various communication platforms in an appropriate and ethical manner befitting the position of an impartial arbiter. Violations of the standards included in the guidelines, which are determined as unbecoming of an official and in violation of the “Code for Athletic Officials,” may cause the suspension of an official’s registration with the MHSAA.
Decisiveness, judgment and confidence are some of the “must-haves” at the highest levels of sports officiating, but they’re also necessary traits at all levels of officiating. Those three traits are tightly tied together in the sense that you can’t truly be decisive without good judgment and the appearance of confidence.
